Substrate
We mainly use two types of substrate for our own inverts, I have labelled them as being either for snails or isopods as this is what we have been using successfully for the last few years.
ISOPOD SUBSTRATE…
A base mix of sedge peat & rotted down woodland compost with frass & worm castings for nutrients & powdered limestone granules for calcium. It holds moisture well and is suitable for burrowing species.
PLEASE NOTE: rotting wood, leaf litter & moss are NOT included so you will need to add your own for isopods.
SNAIL SUBSTRATE…
Similar to our Isopod Mix but with added coco fibre instead of frass & worm castings.
Our isopod / snail substrate is NOT for millipedes or beetle larvae as they will need mostly rotting wood, leaf litter & flake soil.
USED SUBSTRATE…
Our used substrate has been leftover from some of our isopod tub upgrades (rotted woodland compost based) and will probably contain tiny baby isopods (Porcellio laevis - black & white, orange and caramel)
COCO FIBRE…
Pre-soaked, partially dried and loose bagged - ideal if you just want a little bit.
FLAKE SOIL…
We use this for all of our millipedes & flower beetle larvae. I do use wheat bran but no other additives so may not be ideal for larger beetle species.
