Millipede & Isopod Care - how we keep ours

When keeping millipedes or Isopods please be aware that the substrate is very important - they will need to eat it.

We use flake soil for the millipedes, for the isopods we mix flake soil with a little bit of sedge peat & some worm casts.

Millipedes & Isopods will mostly eat dead leaves, rotting wood & various lichens - most species will usually enjoy fruit or veg as an addition to their diet but there are a few species of millipede that won't eat fruit or veg at all so please research your chosen species thoroughly.

We place a bit of black plastic under the chunk of rotting wood, not only does this help to stop any unexpected fungus spreading into the flake soil but they all seem to like curling up under it.

Our Isopods are kept at the following temperatures:

Armadillidium: 18 - 20*C

Cubaris: 22 - 25*C

Porcellio: 20 - 24*C

Most of our millipedes are kept at around 24*C

Some millipedes have climbing branches unless they prefer to stay on the ground (not all millipedes enjoy climbing)

All of our millipedes & isopods like to nibble at sticks with Lichen & Algae growing on them.

After using woodland compost that I hadn’t checked properly I ended up with a native centipede infestation in some of my habitats so if you are using anything collected from the wild, please thoroughly check it first - that unfortunate incident inspired me to make my own flake soil and things are running much more smoothly in my bug rooms now!

This page is only to tell you how we keep ours, there is lots of information out there & everyone does things differently.

What works for us may not work for you - please research any new pets thoroughly before purchase.
